David Bowie was one of the first to create a complete alter ego
in Ziggy Stardust. The height of his popularity was the seventies
and the glam rock period of the early seventies. The eighties were
also noted for many commercial successes, but by the nineties the
innovation and the hits had waned. A global megastar at the height
of his career, Bowie is still recognised as one of the greats of
popular music and one of the most successful UK artists of the past
century. Bowie collaborated with many of the superstars of his period
such as Mick Jagger, Freddie Mercury and John Lennnon. Brian Eno,
an innovator of ambient music collaborated with Bowie on a number
of his most successful albums.
