Short Bio: Elvis is often thought of as the most influential artist of the twentieth century. If not the most influential, certainly the most popular, alongside Michael Jackson. Elvis was one of the original artists to perform rockabilly, a combination of R&B and country. Sam Phillips of Sun Records was the man responsible for kick starting Elvis's career. Borrowing heavily on African American music, there is was some resentment that Elvis was able to attain such worldwide success using material sourced from a community who were not allowed to break through into mainstream music due to racial discrimination. In fact, to begin with, many radio listeners assumed Elvis was black. Elvis himself acknowledged his respect and the debt he owed to gospel and rhythm and blues. Elvis was managed by Colonel Tom Parker for two decades, during which he was at the peak of his popularity. Elvis's stage performance included a range of unique mannerisms which are still a part of his cultural iconography. His music branched over many genre's, such as rock and roll, r&b, blues, country and gospel. Elvis made a range of films which were not as well received as his music. A train of thought is that Elvis or his management made the mistake of focusing too heavily on the movies in the 1960's. Elvis was controversially excluded from Time magazine's list of the '20th century's 100 most important and influential people'. The reason stated was that he did not write any of the songs he performed.

Popular Songs: Blue Suede Shoes, Hound Dog, Heartbreak Hotel, Love Me Tender, Teddy Bear.
