The instrument he performed with was the trumpet, and sang with a distinctive deep gravel voice. He is credited with being one of the founders of jazz, and was performing at the height of jazz's popularity. His contribution to jazz was so great, that he was embraced by popular music in his later years. Some would say his effect on pop music was as influential as it was to jazz. Always noted for his smile, and the joy he brought to his performances.
